Come to Spring Garden!
Spring Garden Area is the heart of the Halifax Capital District. Consisting of nine city blocks the area has over 200 retail shops and services, most independently owned, and supported by convenient parking nearby. This charming, vibrant area is a shoppers’ paradise where brand name fashions, Nova Scotian giftware, spas and salons rub shoulders with excellent hotels, restaurants, cafes and pubs. The area is fast becoming home to a growing number of downtown urban dwellers in desirable, upscale residential developments.
Steeped in history and culture Spring Garden is surrounded by tourist attractions and landmarks such as the Victorian Halifax Public Gardens, the Museum of Natural History, Cambridge Library at Royal Artillery Park and the famous Halifax Citadel to name a few, all adding to a unique experience in living, shopping, working and playing.
Current Developments
HRM in partnership with the Province of Nova Scotia is developing a land use plan for publicly owned lands including the Halifax Memorial Library, the
Provincial Law Court
, the former Halifax Infirmary and municipal parking lots on
Clyde Street
. Area business and the public attended information and discussion sessions to consider this future development.
Throughout the process, there was considerable pressure for large development which may be required for the community at large, but which in some instances may not be best suited for the Spring Garden area in particular. Originally the consultants seemed more heavily swayed toward large development, but, thanks to vigorous public feedback, they are now moving towards a much more balanced approach. We are now working with the South End Resident Association to create a joint initiative and a set criteria which will establish guidelines which are acceptable to the community in the area and that will hopefully have an impact on the process.
