Spring Garden Loosens Ties with Private Security

Spring Garden Loosens Ties with Private Security

ALLNOVASCOTIA - June 9, 2017

Executive Director of the SGABA, Juanita Spencer, discusses the decision to temporarily remove private security services in the Spring Garden area. The Association has hired a private security firm for the past 16 years, however the board recently voted for a three month trial to go without. The last day for the contract was June 1st. The idea behind the trial is to increase police presence on the street and increase the number of calls directed to police. It's been determined that police resources are allocated based on call volumes. The Association has been informed that the Spring Garden area is not deemed a high priority as many calls are directed to security instead of police. As the SGABA is the only Business Imrpovement District who hires a private security company, it's certainly a question of if it's doing what it needs to and if that service is something the Association should provide. The Association is not severing it's ties with security completely. Members will be asked to weigh in if a new contract is warranted at the end of the three month trial.
